Not since you planned your wedding has there been so much planning,
fussing and shopping to do. A nursery can be a place of fantasy, a
circus, a palace, or a quiet country retreat.
Consider a theme or color scheme before planning your Nursery and the rest
will fall into place. This would also be a fun place to consider a
mural. Why not paint a tree in the corner with the branches hanging
on 2 walls? The leaves could be done quickly either with a large sea
sponge forming free form leaves or a large sponge cut into a leaf
shape and applied with shades of green. There are wallpaper murals
offered which may be faster but they are expensive and not as fun.
With a little imagination and and some planning you can turn a room
or even a quiet corner into your baby's haven.
There are some basic pieces of furniture - a bassinet,
make your own cradle,
or crib,
a
changing table, storage, a chair,
a diaper pail, and a car seat you'll need before you can add the
bedding.
Some nice additions include a lamp with a night light and a mobile to
hang over the crib. In the future you can add swings, a
high chairs and so forth.
I remember making the quilt, dust ruffle, diaper stacker and covering a purchased bumper pad to match.
It didn't take long and I was able to get exactly the look I wanted.
When it comes time to start buying clothes, remember, the stores are
in business to make money - keeping that in mind they
generally recommend:
Layette:
4-6 undershirts
4-6 sleeping gowns
4-6 onesies
4-6 stretchies
4-6 hooded towels
4-6 wash clothes
4-6 bibs
3-4 booties
4-6 pairs of socks
1-2 sweaters or sweatshirt
1 going home outfit
1 outfit for a Christening/bris or naming
4-6 receiving blankets
1 dozen cloth diapers
For the crib:
bumpers
dust ruffle
3-6 crib sheets
2-4 quilted mattress pads
2-4 crib blankets
waterproof pads
Whether it's a crotched baby afghan or a christening gown, your
handcrafted additions will be cherished for generations to come.
The layette is your baby's basic wardrode for his or her first few weeks. They get outgrown so quickly they seldom get dirty which is why they make such great hand me downs.
